The Stag Beetle

Hello!
I am a Stag Beetle and I am the largest european insect.

The males (like I am) reach a height of 2,5cm to 7,5cm.
The females remain smaller.
They can reach a height of 4cm.

The males are coined by a mandible, which is looking like a horn.
My mandible does not serve for food intake!
I suck nectar and tree sap.

I like to live in old oak forests.

People can find me in the period between June until August.
Adult beetles are during this time mostly active in the evenings.
At this time I fly around treecrowns to nourrish myself on their tree juices.
Any tree juices represent my source of food.

The summer time is particularly suitable for the partner search.
The females lay our eggs in a piece of spoiled wood.
The larvae need between 2 to 5 years to reach the pupal stage.
The development process depends on the quality of the wood.
The more badly the wood, the more faster the development process.
Our larvae nourrish themselves of decaying wood.

Adult beetles, like me live max. 1 month. :-(
We spend our longest lifetime as larvae.

My existence decreased in the last few years.
Because of that I belong to the protected species.

If you want that I do not become extinct then protect old oak forests.
